Frequently Asked Questions
Time
Clock Communication Error Codes
| Q. |
What causes a COM Port conflict?
|
| A. |
There are many types of computer peripherals connect to your PC through
serial communication ports, or COM ports built in to your PC’s motherboard or
on adapter cards.
To prevent any hardware conflicts, ensure that the COM Port the clock is connected
to does not use the same IRQ as another device. The following table shows standard
COM Port and IRQ settings for most IBM compatible computers:
| Can’t open port: RC=-20 |
The port specified under System Configuration
does not exist. Set the configuration to a valid, unused serial port |
| Can’t open port: RC=-11 |
The specified COM port is already in use by some
other device or was not released properly by a previous operation. Programs
that could open serial ports include
- communication programs (e.g. Hyperterminal)
- PDA software
- FAX software
Exit out of any additional software to see if the conflict goes away. If the
problem disappears, then there was a conflict with one of the programs you had
open. If you're using a PDA, check the configuration for the software for
managing your PDA. Usually the serial port option is enabled even if you're
only using the USB connection.
|
| Can’t open port: RC=-2 |
This message occurs rarely and means the
specified COM port was not open. |
|
| Q. |
What are the standard COM Port COM Hex Addresses?
|
| A. |
Please refer to the table below for the typical
configuration for the serial ports on a PC.

In a standard configuration, four COM ports share two IRQs. To connect the terminal to a port set to an IRQ already in use, change the port’s setting to use non-standard IRQs. For example, if you connect the time clock to the PC’s serial port designated COM 2 (IRQ3), but you already have a modem occupying COM 4 (IRQ3), you will cause a hardware conflict. You need to set COM 2 to a different, valid IRQ. Please consult your computer’s technical manual.

| Q. |
Time Clock Data Collection Screen says: "Collecting from time clock
# ??" and does not do anything.
|
| A. |
Indicates no connection to the time clock.
Check if all connectors are attached.
Check if the time clock and program have the correct port setting. RS-232 and RS-485 connections must be set both at the PC and at the time clock
Check for any breaks in the cabling. Look for any activity that could have damaged the cable like construction, moving furniture, rodent activity, etc.

Modem Clock Communication Errors
| Q. |
Modem Clocks do not respond: When trying to dial, error message "Could not find modem"
|
| A. |
Wrong COM port specified for Remote Clocks in System Configuration.
Modem may already be active. Check the Windows Startup Group for any communication software, or any terminate-and-stay resident programs which initialize the modem, such as fax or data communication programs.
|
| Q. |
PC modem dials out but clock modem just rings.
|
| A. |
Check the phone number
PC modem is off or may not be connected.
Dial up manually and check if the modem picks up.
Make sure clock is configured for modem use.
|
| Q. |
Tone detected, but the line cuts off before connection is established, with message "No Carrier"
|
| A. |
Remove any switch boxes or other devices that may pick up the line before the clock does.
|
| Q. |
Modem connection gets established, but connection is lost after several seconds.
|
| A. |
You may be calling the wrong phone number. There could be a fax machine or computer modem picking up at the other end, not the clock modem.
The phone line may be bad. Check the Line with a regular telephone and listen for static. Connect a fax machine to the remote end and send a fax over that line and check if it works. It may be your line provider.

Program Errors
| Q. |
Program Error: File Cannot Be Locked / File is in Use
|
| A. |
This message may occur during File Maintenance or when editing information. This indicates that another system operator is using a file over the network. The operation will not proceed until the file is released. If editing information within the program, someone else may be working on the same record. Just wait until that person finishes. If running File Maintenance, all other users must be off the program. You should advise the company’s network administrator to get all operators out of the program and terminate any possible crashed sessions.
|
| Q. |
File Access Denied; Cannot update cursor.
|
| A. |
The user has insufficient network access rights.
You should check the access rights on the DBF, DBF.JTA, HISTORY.JTA, NOTES and EMPPICT
folders on the computer that is hosting the Jantek application. On the property sheet
for these folders, check the following on the Security tab:
Make sure that the user or group to which the user is assigned is listed
with at least the following rights:
- Modify
- Read & Execute
- Read
- Write
- Special Permissions
Click on the Advanced button to make sure that the "Inherit from parent the
permission entries that apply to child objects" option is selected.
Select the properties sheet for the shared folder in which the Jantek software
is installed on the host computer. Look at the properties of the share and
look in the Sharing tab, then click on the Permissions. Make sure that either
the user or group to which the user is assigned is given both Read and Write
access (You can also grant Full Access which implicitly assigns these permissions).

| Q. |
Program Error: Too Many Files Open
|
| A. |
This results when the computer does not have enough file handles to open necessary files. If the computer is on a network, the configuration files for the network may need changing.
If on a stand-alone computer, check the FILES item in the CONFIG.SYS file (it is found in the root directory). Make sure that the number is no less than 100. If you make changes to CONFIG.SYS, remember to reboot the computer so that the new settings take effect.
If the computer is on a network, check to see what network redirector is being used. If a combination of IPX.COM and NETX.EXE are used, then you need to check for a SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG. Change (or add if it doesn’t exist) the line setting the FILE HANDLES to at least 100. Make sure that the combination of this number and number specified in the FILES item in the CONFIG.SYS do not exceed 254. It is also very important that the SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG is in the *current* directory at the time NETX.EXE is run (i.e. you should CD into the directory where it is found before running NETX.EXE).
If the computer is on a network and a combination of IPX.COM and NETX.EXE are not being used (e.g. LSL.EXE or NWCLIENT.EXE is used), make sure that the FILES item in
CONFIG.SYS is at least 170.

| Q. |
Program Error: Position is off the Screen
|
| A. |
Some buttons and fields are not where the program expected them to be. Possible causes include using non-standard or custom display settings, like fancy fonts and large font sizes. Also, the font
"Arial" must be installed. If this message appears, use Windows system default settings (small fonts for 800x600 and 1024x768
resolutions).

Overtime Calculation
| Q. |
Overtime is not computing correctly:
|
| A. |
Check the parameters set for daily and weekly overtime.
Check the pay period starting dates on your pay policies. The system will calculate weekly or bi-weekly overtime starting from the reference day you set in the policy.
If your pay period starts on a Tuesday but you are viewing a report for Monday to Sunday,
you will not get the totals you expect.
Also check that the Reference Date in your pay policy is correct for your
pay period. Check the dates for the Current Pay Period by using View Totals
in the Edit Timecard screen. If incorrect, adjust the Reference Date in the
pay policy/ies.
